Using Texture in Art

The implied texture of leaves

Today we will be discussing an art technique used by many artists called texture.  Texture is the ability to make an art piece look almost 2  or 3 dimensional through the use of materials that can stand out or have a certain feel to them.  Check out the pictures below.  Each one of them have texture.  One has what we call implied texture (the artist used lines and drawing skills to represent texture) and the other is real texture whereby an artist used materials and a technique to make the materials adhere to the art a certain way.

Why is texture used?

An artist might want you to actually touch their piece of artwork and not make it seem so fragile.  Art is to be consumed and enjoyed not just on display.

In the case of implied texture, the artist wants you to believe that a picture is fuzzy, hard, soft, etc. by using the lines, shapes, and shadows to create that illusion.

This artist used real texture by creating a tapestry made from fabric.  If you look closely you can see the fuzzy feel of the lines in the cloth. 

Check out this video on the Element of Texture.  Remember an element is an art technique used to make art and a Principle is the rule you follow to make the art.  Example, your teacher tells you to be quiet....that's the rule or principle, the element(s) would be the ways you try to be quiet such as put your head down, look away from the other classmates, read a book, etc.

Artist usually use texture mediums to create real texture, but you can use anything.  I use eggshells, tree branches, stencils, etc. to give the art a piece of real texture.  Come join the fun!

I have loved this design process to the end.  I'm just hoping that others understand my "bigger purpose," to bring a sense of enrichment and joy to the bedrooms of children through my designs.  Each design is belabored with care and concern as to how and what are the influences that go in their bedrooms....the visuals they will see every day.  Our children need a sense of beauty, wonder, learning, and joy in a world that is constantly becoming more frightening.  I want to motivate, inspire, bring in beauty, history, and a sense of self to their very personal and special place, their home, and bedrooms.  This new collection is called "Cultural Excursions."  My aim is to bring in cultures with a tag that gives more education about the country, symbol, or culture of the design.  I also attempted a new take on any symbols that I used so that it speaks of a more, softer, modern time.  

Come along with me on this journey to help children be enlarged and enriched in their own spaces.

Here's to living always "artistically and creatively focused and live life beautifully for God."

Artistic Adventures

I know, I know, you hear this every year.....a new year, a new you.  It's a worn cliche but it doesn't have to be untrue.  I'm learning that if you take one step at a time in achieving your goals, they are possible.  An acorn starts out small but eventually grows tall and strong.  Little baby steps are steps nonetheless.  So what am I alluding to?  It's time to focus on YOU and do something fun for yourself or your child.  My goal this year is to offer Art Adventures which are just what it says......Adventures with Art that are more than just an art or craft class.  I'm adding a trip to the mix.

This gives yourself and your child an opportunity to enjoy, relax and learn.  Come join us!
